Emma Stone

Biography of Emma Stone

Emma Stone belongs to a new generation of Hollywood stars: less diva-like and unafraid to play charming, even slightly foolish roles. Above all, she is professional. Oversleeping, missed appointments, or bad days – such star tantrums are not part of Emma's repertoire. She has pursued her big dream with ambition since childhood.

Clever Girl with Big Dreams

At the age of eleven, little Emily – that is the actress's real first name – already knew: I will become an actress. And not just anywhere; she aimed high. Next stop: Hollywood. But how does one convince parents to move from a province in Arizona to Los Angeles? The clever teenager tried it with a PowerPoint presentation. As musical accompaniment, she appropriately chose Madonna's song "Hollywood".

And indeed – at the age of 15, Emma moved with her mother to the American film capital. Upon joining the Screen Actors Guild, she had to choose a new name because an Emily Stone was already registered and duplicates were prohibited. Thus she became "Emma Stone" and is known as such, though colleagues sometimes refer to her as "Emily" in interviews.

Shoots with Prominent Colleagues

Having reached her dream destination, Emma Stone worked even harder for her success. She moved from an unsuccessful talent show to numerous guest roles in series such as "Malcolm in the Middle" and "Drive". Eventually, she even made the leap to the big screen. For her first leading role in "Easy A" (2010), she was rewarded with various awards and even a Golden Globe nomination. From then on, Hollywood filmmakers knocked on her door more and more often, and Stone found herself alongside film colleagues like Ryan Gosling, Mila Kunis, and Steve Carell in the top acting league.

Vanity and Airs Are Foreign to Emma

The little Emily from back then has finally arrived where she always wanted to be: at the shining firmament of Hollywood. For her, however, this is no reason to walk through the world with her nose in the air. Amid all her success, she has remained likeable and down-to-earth. Colleagues and directors she has worked with have only praise for the talented actress. She is not vain and has no problem looking like an idiot in a role, as she herself says. This attitude speaks not only for her good character but also for the fact that she takes her job seriously.

Emma Stone Has a Good Hand in Selecting Her Roles

But rest assured, dear Emily: In her roles, you usually look anything but idiotic. Emma is increasingly developing into a sought-after and serious actress; directors are vying for her. Her performance in "The Help" brought her great attention and praise as one of the most talented actresses of her generation. The "The Amazing Spider-Man" films also went down well with audiences and became box-office hits.

And for Emma, the job was a good choice: She met Andrew Garfield, whom she got to know and love. Their love lasted four years before the relationship failed. Perhaps Emma had focused too much on her career? In any case, thanks to clever role selection, she managed to play only in outstanding films, such as the Oscar-winning "Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)" and Woody Allen's masterpiece "Irrational Man".

"La La Land" Breaks All Records

But Emma truly outdid herself with her outstanding performance in the musical film "La La Land". The film by Damien Chazelle, starring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, broke all records during the 2016/2017 awards season. Not only did it win more than 100 awards, but it also set a new record at the Golden Globe Awards 2017 with seven wins. Equally record-breaking: seven nominations, seven wins – something like that had never happened before. Naturally, Emma did not go empty-handed; she won a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical. AND: She won the Oscar for Best Actress! No wonder all of Hollywood is at Emma's feet. Even the lingerie label "Victoria's Secret" put her at the top of its "What is Sexy?" list.

Emma Stone's Love Life

With all this professional success, one wonders: How is Emma Stone's private life? After several failed relationships, Emma dated Dave McCary, one of the minds behind the US show "Saturday Night Live". They have been together since 2017, and an engagement ring quickly sparkled on Emma's finger. In 2020, wedding bells rang. Emma Stone spoke in an interview with Elle magazine about how she never imagined getting married or becoming a mother as a teenager. However, she has since completely changed her mind – and in March 2021, she had her first child, a daughter.

The Role of Her Life

In "Poor Things" (2023), Stone plays the unusual role of an adult woman with the brain of a toddler. Concepts like politeness or etiquette – and of course shame – are completely foreign to her character Bella. She told the New York Times that Bella "is probably the role of my life." Stone said she cried a lot on the last day of shooting, out of exhaustion, but also because she loved the project so much and regretted that it was over. Even in interviews for the film, she repeatedly broke into tears. She apologized for her emotional outburst: "This is so stupid, it's strange!" We find that likeable!

But not only Emma Stone liked "Poor Things". The sci-fi film, along with Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer", was among the winners of the 2024 Golden Globes. In the Comedy/Musical category, it even defeated the most successful film of 2023, "Barbie" with Margot Robbie. She won the Golden Globe for Best Actress for "Poor Things" as well as the Oscar in the same category. Overall, the film took home four Oscars – a great success for everyone involved.

New Success on the Horizon

Afterwards, she continued working with "Poor Things" director Yorgos Lanthimos. At the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, she presented the episodic film "Kinds of Kindness", in which Stone played three different roles. In 2025, "Bugonia" followed, for which Stone even shaved her head. The dedication paid off: This film also received four Oscar nominations.

In parallel, she worked as a producer and was behind films like "A Real Pain", which was particularly well received by critics. In the future, she wants to continue developing in this role: Together with her longtime friend, Hollywood star Jennifer Lawrence, she is planning a spin-off about Miss Piggy from The Muppet Show.
