Apple Watch Ultra 3: Key Facts

Released in September 2025, the Apple Watch Ultra 3 is Apple's premium smartwatch aimed at athletes, explorers, and adventurers. It starts at $799 and features a 49mm titanium case, the largest Apple Watch display at 1,245 sq mm, and an S10 chip. Key upgrades over the previous generation include slimmer bezels, a brighter LTPO3 display with a ticking seconds hand in always-on mode, 5G cellular support, satellite connectivity for emergency SOS and messaging, and a 42-hour battery life (72 hours in Low Power Mode). It also introduces new health features like hypertension alerts, sleep apnea detection, and a Sleep Score. The design remains rugged with MIL-STD-810H certification and 100m water resistance, plus an 86-decibel siren.

Design and Durability

The Apple Watch Ultra 3 retains the same robust design as its predecessor: a lightweight aerospace-grade titanium case, flat sapphire crystal display, and an international orange Action button. It is available in Natural Titanium and Black Titanium finishes, the latter using a diamond-like carbon coating for scratch resistance. The watch measures 49mm by 44mm by 12mm and weighs 61.6 grams. It is certified to MIL-STD-810H for extreme temperatures (-4°F to 131°F) and is water-resistant to 100 meters, suitable for recreational scuba diving up to 40 meters. The depth gauge and seal check feature ensures reliability for underwater use.

Display and Always-On

The Ultra 3 features an LTPO3 wide-angle OLED display with 3,000 nits peak brightness and 1 nit minimum for dark environments. The bezels are 24% thinner, expanding the active screen area to 1,245 sq mm, the largest of any Apple Watch. The display now shows a ticking seconds hand in always-on mode due to a faster refresh rate. Viewing angles are improved, making it easier to read in bright sunlight.

S10 Chip and Gestures

The S10 chip powers the watch with a 64-bit dual-core processor and 4-core Neural Engine. While performance is similar to the S9, it enables Double Tap (index finger and thumb tap) for one-handed control and the new Wrist Flick gesture to dismiss notifications or calls. Storage remains 64GB.

Health and Fitness Features

The Apple Watch Ultra 3 includes all standard Apple Watch health sensors: optical and electrical heart rate sensors for ECG, blood oxygen monitoring (with U.S. limitation due to patent dispute), temperature sensing for fertility tracking, and fall/crash detection. New features exclusive to watchOS 26 include Hypertension Alerts (analyzing heart rate data over 30 days for possible high blood pressure) and Sleep Apnea Detection (using accelerometer to track breathing interruptions). Sleep Score gives a numerical rating for sleep quality. The Depth app and Tides app support water activities, and the Compass app includes Waypoints and Backtrack for navigation.

Battery Life and Charging

Battery life improves to 42 hours of normal use (up from 36 hours on Ultra 2) and up to 72 hours with Low Power Mode. Fast charging reaches 80% in 45 minutes, and a 15-minute charge provides 12 hours of use. The watch comes with a braided charging cable.

Connectivity

The Ultra 3 adds 5G cellular support (alongside LTE) and satellite connectivity for Emergency SOS, text messaging, and Find My when off-grid. It includes a second-generation Ultra Wideband chip for precision finding of iPhone and AirTags, Bluetooth 5.3, and dual-frequency GPS (L1+L5) for accurate positioning. The 86-decibel siren can be activated manually and heard up to 600 feet away.

Bands and Availability

Apple offers three sport-focused bands: Trail Loop, Alpine Loop, and Ocean Band, each designed for different activities. The watch is compatible with 44mm, 45mm, and 46mm bands from other Apple Watch models. It launched on September 19, 2025, and is available from Apple and other retailers.

Compared to the Apple Watch Series 11 ($399) and SE 3 ($249), the Ultra 3 offers superior durability, longer battery, satellite features, and advanced sensors for extreme sports and exploration. It is not expected to receive a major hardware update until 2028 at the earliest, making it a solid investment for those who need its capabilities.
